2019 Astrophotography Competition Winner
We are delighted to announce that our expert panel has selected the winner from the excellent images submitted to our 2019 astrophotography competition. Before announcing the winner, everyone at Atik Cameras would like to thank all participants for their submissions. As astrophotographers ourselves, we appreciate the skill, dedication, and effort required to capture such stunning images.
Winner
Jonathan Fertil – Antennae Galaxy – Atik 460EX
About the image: The Antennae Galaxy is a long-term favourite target of Jonathan’s from his days in France. Now located in Chile, Jonathan captured this target from a new perspective using PixInsight for drizzle x2 processing to enhance resolution and reduce noise, followed by finishing in Photoshop.
About the astrophotographer: Jonathan’s astrophotography journey began around a decade ago, imaging early mornings before work. His passion led him to work in a Chilean observatory, further enhancing his skills and resulting in outstanding images like this one.
Runners Up
Régis le Bihan – The Heart of the Heart (Melotte 15) – Atik One 6.0
About the image: Régis captured the fine details of the Melotte 15 star cluster using narrowband filters (6nm Ha, OIII, and SII) over five nights in Toulon, France, highlighting the cosmic clouds created by stellar winds and radiation.
About the astrophotographer: Régis developed an interest in astronomy at age 10 and has transitioned from DSLR to dedicated astrophotography cameras over the past five years. He continues to enjoy capturing high-quality astro images using Atik equipment.
José Mtanous – The Hyades Cluster – Atik 11000
About the image: José captured the Hyades Cluster during a Christmas trip to a dark site in Mexico. This image also received NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) award on 22nd January 2020.
About the astrophotographer: José is based across the southern United States and Mexico and maintains a personal blog highlighting his favourite images. Read José’s blog here.
